These are our special little pupsters who, for one reason or another, are considered unadoptable. Our main goal is to help them to become adoptable and place them in forever loving homes. All help is greatly appreciated. Name: Harold 3/9/07 August 15, 2000 arrived in Texas just as it does every year......the typical scorcher of a day. While most people were concerned about keeping themselves cool and praying that their air conditioners held out until the temperatures dropped below the three digit mark, there was something else taking place. It was a momma Yorkie giving birth to her precious babies. Yes, on this hot day, a litter of beautiful puppies, that a breeder looked forward to cashing in on was being born. Well, as weeks went by and the puppies started exploring and getting into things, it was definitely time to send them on their way, even though they should have remained with their momma for a few more weeks. One little male puppy was selected as the "chosen one" for a lady's son and soon to be daughter-in-law. Yes, he was going to be a gift for this newlywed couple. You know, now days people are looking beyond the crystal and china to give as wedding gifts, and in this case it was no different. Why not start them off with their very own bouncing fur-baby, who is small enough to carry around in a sporty bag and look adorable in clothes? Well, this little "chosen one" was given the name Harold and was loved very much by his new mom and dad. They were so thrilled with this fur-ball but really knew nothing about the Yorkie breed. So, when their precious Harold started getting older, they noticed that he had a peculiar personality; but because he was so darn cute, they didn't really think his actions were a concern. As a matter of fact, just like all new parents, they bragged to friends about how Harold would sit up and chatter his teeth for them. As more time went by, the family took a closer look at what was going on with Harold and decided to tell their vet about this behavior. After a full exam, the family was given the heartbreaking news and told that Harold was mentally retarded. Their vet also told them, that every time they saw Harold chattering his teeth, it wasn't that it was part of his cute personality, but instead it was Harold having a seizure. The family was no doubt devastated by the sad news, but journeyed forward with Harold and his problems. Then, like the jingle goes, first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby......well, you know the rest. Anyway, Harold's family grew as two beautiful siblings entered their household. As these children grew older and became more playful, like young children do, it only became more difficult for Harold. The active family was becoming too much for Harold to cope with, and that's when it was realized that it wasn't fair to keep Harold in an environment that kept him stressed out all of the time. So, with all of that being said, Harold arrived at Carly's Castle with his favorite bed, toys, sweater, shears and everything else in tow. Other problems that Harold has is that he will not stand on all four feet at one time. Strange, but true. Harold will always keep one of his back legs lifted off the ground, then after about 8 to 10 seconds, he will put the one leg back down but raise the other back leg. It's almost as if he is marching in place but in slow motion. Bless his heart....it is the strangest thing that I've ever seen. Harold was like a stuffed toy the first two weeks he was here at Carly's Castle. He NEVER moved an inch, except to blink his eyelids. If I placed him in his bed a certain way, he stayed that way until I picked him up to moved him. It took almost four weeks before Harold would even turn his head to look at me. I pretty much still have to carry Harold around everywhere. When you pick him up, he gets very stiff and will stick his arms straight out as if he's flying. He is getting now, to where if I place him down outside, he will walk over to the grass to potty but rarely does he walk back to me. He usually just waits for me to go to pick him up to carry him back inside. Once inside, I place him down and he will basically do a fast walk, to the nearest doggy bed that he can find. In the beginning, Harold would never eat the food that I put in front of him. At the time Harold came to stay with us, I was syringe feeding another dog and he showed an interest in being syringe fed, so basically he ate his meals from a syringe. Then after another week went by, I was able to graduate him to eating a little food out of my hand. Harold is now finally eating on his own, but the only food that he will eat is raw. Yes, raw food.....like raw beef, raw lamb, raw chicken, etc. Harold obviously loves his meal times now, because when I walk in the room with his food, he is standing in his bed waiting for me. I'm very pleased that Harold likes the raw food because that is what I feed my own dogs, as well as my fosters and I personally feel that there is nothing better. I will say in closing, that Harold has neurological problems no doubt. If he gets stressed out, he will go into a seizure. Many things frighten Harold, and patience is the key to helping him get through the day without stressing him out. Harold is precious indeed, but definitely not a player at all. I would definitely list Harold as high maintenance only because of the time that I need to spend in stimulating his mind and body. Sure, anyone could just leave him quietly in his bed all day, but that would be a horrible and unfair life for him to have to live. At this time he is definitely not ready to be adopted out, and I am unsure if he will ever be able to be adopted out, but we are taking it one day at a time. Harold has made great strides since he first arrived at Carly's Castle and I am looking forward to seeing more improvements with Harold in the near future. I shudder to think what he must have gone through before he came to us. He allows me to pet him when he is in his bed, but that is about the only time. If I pick him up his little legs go straight out and he has actually tried to bite me. Just a frightened little waif. He is a cutie pie and loves to eat, always waking up in time for his meals and snacks. Other than that, he is normally sleeping in his favorite cuddle bed. When he eats, he barks and mumbles a lot as if to talk with his food. His Auntie Anne loves his cute little "flying nun" ears. He recently had a terrible episode of bleeding, but is doing well now. Right after that he changed for a few days and stayed close by my side. Perhaps he knew that he had been in the hospital for a reason and that he had been helped. Whatever it was, it was so sweet for the short time that it lasted. He is a special boy indeed, and we ask that you keep little Louie in your thoughts and prayers.
